Get a Roadworthy Certificate in Lilydale and Melbourne

Anyone selling a car or registering it in a new state needs a roadworthy certificate. To obtain this certificate, it must undergo a complete inspection by a licensed professional. A car mechanic will check various car components and their overall structural integrity. At AG Automotive, we perform these evaluations and can provide a vehicle safety certificate in Lilydale and Melbourne. Our team ensures your vehicle is thoroughly checked and meets all safety standards by the time it leaves the shop.

What Is a Roadworthy Certificate?

A Roadworthy Certificate, also known as an RWC, is a document that verifies a vehicle’s safety for use on public roads. It is a legal requirement issued by authorised testers for cars being sold or transferred to a new owner. The inspection covers key components like brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, and more, ensuring they are in good working condition. If your car passes the inspection, you will receive the certificate of roadworthiness.

Why Do You Need a Roadworthy Certificate?

A road safety certificate verifies that a vehicle meets the required safety standards mandated by the state or territory’s transport authority. Hence, it has a significant importance for both vehicle owners and potential buyers. This document is valuable for several reasons, including

  • Vehicle Sales

If you are selling your car, the buyer will need an RWC certificate to register the vehicle in their name. Without it, the sale cannot be completed legally. Ensuring you have a valid RWC makes the selling process smoother and increases the attractiveness of the vehicle to buyers. It reassures them that the car is safe and they won’t face immediate repair costs after purchase.

  • Transferring Ownership

When transferring ownership of any vehicle, a certification is required to ensure the vehicle is safe for the new owner. This process is essential not only for legal compliance but also for on-road safety. The certificate acts as a guarantee that the vehicle has passed all necessary safety checks. It provides peace of mind and reduces the risk of accidents caused by mechanical failures.

  • Re-registering a Vehicle

If your vehicle registration has expired, you will need a car roadworthy certificate to renew it. This step ensures that all vehicles on the road meet current safety standards, reducing the likelihood of accidents due to mechanical issues. Keeping your vehicle roadworthy helps maintain public safety while ensuring that you remain compliant with local laws and regulations.

  • Peace of Mind

Even if you are not selling or transferring your vehicle, having an RWC gives you confidence that your car is safe to drive. Knowing that your ride has passed a thorough safety inspection can help you avoid unexpected breakdowns. Having an RWC also helps identify and fix minor issues before they become major problems, extending the lifespan of your vehicle.

What Is Included in a Roadworthy Check?

The inspection associated with a certificate for roadworthiness is thorough and covers a wide range of components. This is a way to ensure that the vehicle is safe to drive. Here are the key areas checked during the inspection:

  • Wheels/Tyres

Inspecting the wheels and tyres ensures they are free from any major damage. Tyres are checked for adequate tread depth to maintain road grip. The technician will also look for any cuts, cracks, or bulges on the tyres. Securing the wheels are attached and do not wobble is crucial for safe driving.

  • Brakes

Proper brake function is essential for road safety. The brakes are thoroughly checked to ensure the car stops quickly and safely. This involves inspecting the pads for excessive wear and checking for any leaks in the system. The brake pedal is tested for proper response and firmness.

  • Steering Components

Maintaining the steering system is vital for precise vehicle control. A smooth and noise-free operation is essential, so technicians check for any loose or worn parts. The car must be responsive at all times. Steering fluid levels are also checked to prevent leaks.

  • Suspension

A well-maintained suspension enhances driving comfort and control. As such, part of the roadworthiness certificate involves its inspection to keep the car stable and comfortable. Our technicians look for any broken or worn-out parts and ensure the car does not bounce excessively when pressure is applied. Shock absorbers are tested to guarantee a smooth ride.

  • Seats/Seat Belts

Ensuring the seats and seatbelts are in good condition is crucial for passenger safety. They are checked to ensure they are firmly attached and do not move around. Seatbelts are inspected for any fraying or cuts and must latch securely and release easily. Additionally, the functionality of seat adjustments is also tested.

  • Body Rust or Damage

The car’s body is inspected for any signs of rust or damage. Technicians look for rust spots that could weaken the structure. Any visible dents or damage are also assessed. Addressing body rust and damage is important for maintaining the car’s integrity and appearance.

  • Windscreen/Wipers

Keeping the windscreen and wipers in good condition ensures clear vision in all weather conditions. The windscreen is checked for cracks or chips that could impair visibility. Wiper blades are also tested to ensure they clean the screen effectively. The condition of the windscreen washer system is also evaluated.

  • Lights/Electrical

All lights, including the headlights, brake lights, and indicators, are checked for proper operation. The electrical system is inspected for any faults or loose connections. A functional light and electrical component is vital for vehicle safety and communication on the road.

  • Exhaust

The exhaust system is inspected for any leaks or damage. It must be securely mounted and operate efficiently. Ensuring the exhaust system is in good condition reduces harmful emissions and maintains engine performance.

If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will be provided with a list of items that need to be repaired or replaced. You will have 14 days to fix the issues and return for a re-inspection. The team at Ag Automotive were amazing! They’ve kept me safe consistently throughout my travels with my Toyota Hiace Van and dealt with its issues with a professional and friendly attitude. They are very experienced and saved me quite a lot of money when it came to repairs, I never felt like I wasn’t welcomed! David would often talk me through the issues despite me having little knowledge on vehicles, I felt equal and confident when leaving my van in their hands. Thank you guys!!

I have a VZ commodore fitted with a Tartarini LPG system. The LPG stopped working, I took it to a local LPG guy but he couldn’t fix it, I took it to another LPG Guy but he advised me to upgrade it to another brand that he could service, and then I found AG Automotive, took it to them, they were confident they could repair it, and they did, they even gave me a loan car in the interim. Job was good and the price reasonable. I have used LPG in all my cars in the last 20 years. It's getting harder to find a good LPG service guy, I am glad I found AG Automotive, I will use them again and I highly recommend them.

David and the team are amazing! So so helpful, accommodating and patient. Being a women, I feel so looked after and can trust in what the team is recommending because honestly mechanics and cars is not my strong point. Whether it is a general service, or more of a complex issue, they are able to fix it every time. Gentle on the wallet and always keep you in the loop of what is going on throughout your service. I have sent my little Hyundai i30 and my partners Nissan Patrol to the team and AG Auto and will continue to do so. Thanks Guys!
